Year 7 Design & Technology
3D Design projects
Metal moving toy project
The students learn about the properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals before gaining an understanding of their uses. As part of their homework they explore basic mechanisms before moving on to manufacture their moving toy. They will learn how to work with metals as they cut and shape aluminium using hand tools.
Novelty LED light project
This project focuses on introducing basic electrical components as the students design, develop and manufacture a small battery powered novelty LED light. Whilst the base and circuit construction elements of the project are essentially focused practical tasks there is an opportunity for the students to design the illuminated acrylic part of their product.
Cookie cutter project
Building on the theme of shaping plastics the students learn how to use the vacuum forming process to shape polystyrene sheet as they manufacture a cookie cutter. They work through the design process before manufacturing the wooden former used to shape the sheet plastic. Moving into the food technology area the students prepare the cookie dough before using their cutter to shape a batch of cookies.
Food Technology projects
In Food Technology we aim to give students a solid foundation in healthy eating, by investigating what a healthy diet looks like and the importance of healthy eating. We use the Eatwell Plate as the foundation and we explore a different section of the plate every half term.
Fruit and Vegetables
In year 7 we vary between making coleslaw and mini apple strudels. With the apple strudels we look at working with pastry, peeling, slicing and using the oven. With the coleslaw we focus on chopping, peeling and slicing as well as mixing and combining.
Cereals and Starches
In year 7 the students make pizza which introduces them to working with dough (kneading and proving) as well as grating and spreading.
Meat and Protein
Students love making chicken fajitas in year 7 as they learn about working with meat safely and hygienically as well as frying, chopping and slicing.
Milk and Dairy
In year 7 the students make a smoothie (this year we have started growing our own fruit, which students will harvest and use in their smoothies). They also focus on blending ingredients and using a variety of equipment to achieve this.
Foods high in Fats and Sugars
Year 7’s make shortbread. We combine this with their cookie cutter project from product design. They use the rubbing in method again and look at shaping and forming.
