What is the HT recycling project?

This year our staff, students and parents have been collecting plastic bottle tops to support our new recycling project.  Students have converted over 100Kg of plastic which might have otherwise ended up in landfill into useful products and components to use in their Design & Technology projects.  But!  How have they achieved this you might ask?

NEW! Festive fundraisers

Why not support our student's fundraising efforts by buying a set of festive decorations made from recycled plastic.  All money raised will go to our school charity.

Step 1. Collect and sort

During our lunchtime and after school clubs our team of students have been sorting the thousands of bottle tops into separate colours.

Step 2. Shred

Using our new granulator machine the students shred the bottle tops into fine plastic fragments small enough to be re-processed into new products.

Step 3. Mould

The small shredded granules can then be loaded into our new injection moulding machine where the plastic is melted down and injected into an aluminum mould.

Step 4. Developing our own moulds

Last year we developed our first successful mould which students have used to mass produce the wheels for their own electric race cars.

Step 5. Using the moulded parts in our projects...

Since investing in our new recycling system, students have manufactured the wheels for their electric race cars from recycled materials.  We have been able to put our waste plastic to good use, reducing demands on new resources and reducing waste.  To date over 300 electric car projects have been completed, all with recycled wheels.

Putting the recycling system through its paces.... introducing the HT Fundraising club

Over the last year our Design and Technology club students have been designing and developing their own moulds as part of a charity fundraising project.  Our students have developed a range of moulds which they can then use to mass produce Christmas decorations.  Here are some of the designs they have produced so far...

Going into mass production

During our Technology club sessions students have been shredding the bottle tops that have been collected by staff and students and using this recycled plastic to mass produce large quantities of each decoration.
