Y9 Food & Nutrition


Finnish fruit plait

Ingredients
​250g strong white flour
1 x 15ml spoon mixed spice or cinnamon
½ x 5 ml spoon salt
60g dark chocolate chips
1 x 7g sachet of dried yeast
25g caster sugar
15g butter or soft baking spread
125ml lukewarm milk
1 egg (medium)

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C or gas mark 6.
  2. Line the baking tray.
  3. Place the flour, spice, yeast and salt into the mixing bowl
  4. In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm (NOT HOT) Stir the sugar into the milk, Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add the butter to the milk until melted.
  5. Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the milk
  6. Break the egg into the small bowl and beat with the fork.
  7. Add half the beaten egg.
  8. Mix to a soft dough using the palette knife.
  9. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. Add your choc chips to the dough and continue to knead until combined
  10. With lightly floured hands, divide the mixture into three portions and roll into sausage shapes the length of the baking tray.
  11. Place the lengths onto the baking tray and neatly plait together, tucking in the ends.
  12. Brush with the remaining egg.
  13. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 170°C or gas 4, and bake for a further 10 - 15 minutes.
  14. Remove the plait and transfer to the cooling rack.  
  15. ​NOW WASH ALL YOUR EQUIPMENT AND CLEAN DOWN YOUR WORKSTATIONS.

Potato wedges

X2 Large potatoes
Tablespoon of Oil
Black Pepper
Any herbs you may like to jazz them up!

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C
  2. Cut potatoes into wedges (Leave skin on), put your wedges into a bowl
  3. Add your oil and any seasonings/herbs
  4. Toss your wedges to make sure they are fully covered in the seasoning
  5. Place on a lined baking tray and bake for 20-30 mins until golden and soft!

Fruity flapjack

​Ingredients
2x15ml spoons golden syrup
50g butter or soft spread 
50g sugar
150g oats
50g dried fruit, e.g. sliced apricots
Method
  1. Preheat oven to 200C
  2. Place the syrup, butter and sugar into a saucepan and gently heat until the spread has melted.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the oats.
  4. Add your dried fruit and mix
  5. Empty the oat mixture into your tin and press down so it is compact
  6. Place your tin on a baking tray
  7. Bake for 15 - 20 minutes until lightly browned.
  8. Remove from the oven and leave to cool

Chicken Stir-Fry

​Ingredients
100g Fine noodles
1 Chicken breast
1 clove garlic
½ Onion
½ Pepper
Tablespoon of oil
Splash of soy sauce
Method
1. In a saucepan, fill half way with water and bring to the boil on your hob, add the noodles and cook for 3 mins.
2. Drain the noodles in a colander, rinse with cold water and leave to one side
3. On a RED chopping board, cut your chicken into strips
4. On a GREEN/BROWN chopping board, slice your onion and peppers into strips. Squash and slice your garlic
5. Get a frying pan – put your oil into the frying pan and put onto the hob, heat the oil on a med/high heat.
6. Add your onion and garlic, cook for 1 min.
7. Now add your chicken and stir fry for 5-6 mins – check that it is cooked (It should be white all the way through)
8. Now add your peppers and soy sauce, stir fry for a further 2 mins
9. Rinse your noodles again in cold water to loosen them up, add the noodles to your chicken/veg, cook for a further 2 mins until all noodles have re heated
10. Serve
